I honestly tried not to get too pissed off about “Faking it” but the more I see of it, the more I want to stab something with a rusty spoon. I’m not usually an outward hater of any show or fandom, and I try not to get involved in things like this, but seriously this show makes me so fucking angry. I’m sorry if I offend anyone with this post, but I refuse to accept something so blatantly fetishistic and misogynistic. It saddens me that I’ve seen people saying that they’re just happy for some “lesbian representation”, but what kind of representation is this exactly? Now, maybe I’m just missing “the big picture” here, but from where I’m standing, the only thing I see is a supposedly “quirky” show aimed to amuse those who can’t even begin to grasp the difficulties of living as an LGBT individual. I’ve heard the arguments, I recognize that the show hasn’t really gone anywhere yet, and that yes, it could change, but the mere premise of it is enough to glorify behaviors that continue to cause distress to people who are truly struggling. It completely sugarcoats the hardships faced every day by queer individuals, and vastly mis-represents a minority that is already incredibly misunderstood and dismissed by society. From what I can tell, this is a show that glorifies objectification, undermines the struggle of countless individuals, fetishisizes and dehumanizes lesbian relationships and suggests that being gay (or pretending to be) is a fucking cake walk that will ultimately win you popularity; all to be a source of “edgy and hilarious” entertainment to an audience that most likely has no personal experience or knowledge of the real issues the show so carefully chooses to ignore.
I’m sorry, I’m not trying to shame anyone for enjoying it, I’m not trying to attack anyone’s opinions, and I’m certainly not trying to start any fights, but this greatly upsets me. Like I said, I understand that the show hasn’t really done much yet, but from all I’ve seen, I’m legitimately afraid of the consequences of such a petty (insulting) representation of the LGBT community, as well as the effect it will have on women. Again, I’m sorry for my harsh words, but I feel it’s necessary to voice my opinions on this subject.
